A few years ago I made this playlist.
I was in the middle of my second or third semester at Rollins College, when the evening air was brisk and the days would end with hues of pink, orange, and purple. I was writing a lot, and feeling like what I had to say mattered. My friends and I once sat under the moon listening to whatever was popular at the time (probably Chainsmokers and the like) while we cracked jokes and talked about the future–one big question mark. Probably thinking we would feel that free forever.
I live around six hours from that place now. Everyone I knew has graduated and moved on to different cities.
I moved away from Florida and struggled in a big city for a year. Stopped feeling so romantic about the colors in the sky, or what it’s like to watch the sun break through the trees on a cold day in January.
Things aren’t simple anymore. And if they ever can be again–who knows? All I do know is that nothing is the same as it once was.
Except for this: the future is still one big question mark. Maybe it will be even better than the last. In the meantime, it’s nice to have this playlist.
What songs make you feel free?
